Calligraphy

Description: This calligraphy experience is held at a historic Buddhist temple, where shodō (Japanese calligraphy) has long been practiced as a form of spiritual discipline as well as an art. More than writing beautiful characters, calligraphy in Buddhism is considered a meditative practice that reflects the state of one’s mind.

The session is fully guided by the priest, who will introduce the cultural and spiritual background of calligraphy, including its close relationship with Zen and Buddhist teachings. You will learn the basics of brush handling, ink preparation, and the correct posture before carefully writing selected kanji or phrases connected to Buddhist philosophy.

As you focus on each stroke, the experience naturally slows your breathing and sharpens your awareness, creating a calm and contemplative atmosphere. This is a meaningful opportunity to experience Japanese culture not as a spectator, but through mindful practice, guided by someone who lives this tradition daily.
