Boso Fan Making

Description:
Discover the traditional art of Bōsō uchiwa—handmade Japanese fans that have been crafted in the Bōsō region for centuries. In this immersive workshop, you will learn each step of the process from skilled artisans who are officially certified by the Bōsō Uchiwa Promotion Council. This certification is awarded to only a small number of experts—currently just eight recognized craftsmen—preserving this rare and refined craft.

Under their guidance, you’ll experience traditional techniques such as splitting bamboo, shaping the ribs, applying washi paper, and assembling your own functional Bōsō uchiwa. Along the way, you’ll also learn about the history and cultural significance behind these iconic fans. At the end of the session, you’ll take home your one-of-a-kind handcrafted souvenir—an elegant reminder of Japanese craftsmanship and tradition.
